life without tv

Our contract with Directv ran out two weeks ago and with a baby on the way and adding diapers to our budget, we decided not to renew.
I'm not gonna lie, I miss tv.

But I've actually been amazed at how much more productive I've been able to be without it sucking me in for hours on end. I actually stayed on top of the laundry and didn't have six loads waiting for me.

Plus, I've found that there are blog substitutes for the shows I've been missing.

I miss all things HGTV, but I love to read Young House Love and see how they DIY almost everything.

I miss Pawn Stars and Picker Sisters, but I love to see what fun things people find thrifting via Southern Hospitality.
Art is Beauty

I miss Project Runway and the Style Network but I love to read Kendi Everyday for fashion inspiration.

I miss Top Chef and the Food Network, but I love to read what The Pioneer Woman is cooking up!

Now, if only there were blogs about housewives who don't get along, I'd be all set. My husband is rejoicing that I will no longer have the opportunity to watch that show.

So, I guess in time maybe I'll forget how much I loved tv and just love reading blogs a little more. It's still like getting a little dose of reality tv, reading blogs, because I get a peek into other people's lives and there's just something entertaining about that.

Luckily, there's always Hulu for the Bachelor.

  1. You will learn to not miss it anymore, trust me. After we moved in our cable stopped working for a couple weeks and after realizing we didn't miss it we just canceled it. We just have internet and watch a couple shows on hulu and/or Netflix. Throw a couple blogs in the mix and I am set on entertainment. You're completely right about getting things done too. Especially with a baby on the way you'll appreciate less distractions. We're going on a year with no tv and have no plans to renew it. Lord knows our lives will get no less busy from here on out!

    1. I know you're right Hilary...and I definitely should look into getting Netflix. I guess I just miss laying on the couch after a long day and being mindlessly entertained. :) I know pretty soon I won't miss it at all with a new little man taking up my time. :)

  2. We don't have cable, but did get $10 bunny ears from WalMart to keep up with the weather, PBS for kids and a few tv shows that come on local channels. We went over a year without any tv. It was fine, but we do love having 1 tv with bunny ears.
I always watched tv when I was up at night nursing babies so I wouldn't fall asleep. I'm sure you will find plenty to keep you busy. Enjoy your new found freedom!

    1. That's definitely what we need to do is get an antenna for local channels! I can see myself wanting some tv company while cradling/nursing a newborn for sure!

  3. We've not had cable in years. Hulu and you tube are great. With children I like having DVDs because I know Just what they are watching. We get DVDs from the library and I know you like to yard sale and that's a good place to pick some up. You will need to start your collection because in about a year or two you'll be watching Clifford, veggie tales and Disney movies. :-)

    1. Ya know, I was just thinking that this past weekend - I saw some kids DVDs at a yard sale and I contemplated picking some up but then didn't. Good advice though!
