decorating for fall

I've officially changed my living room decor for fall. And I love it. Plaid, pumpkins, pukey yellow. I love it all.

I also love updating my mantle with the seasons - it's really the only spot in the house that gets a full seasonal change. (You can see some of my previous mantle transitions.) I think this is a great new home for my book wreath, since the plate wall bumped him out of his spot.

The coffee table decor gets a bit of a switch-up too. This deer and her baby come out at fall and stay all the way through Christmas. psst - I have a similar reindeer for sale in the shop if you're looking.  SOLD

I had become so accustomed to seeing the moss letter G on the front door, I couldn't bear to give the concept up just yet - so I decided to do a yarn wrapped G for fall. 

And, of course, the best part* of fall decor - a candycorn candy bowl.  

*Give me a week and I'll be singing a different tune. Every year, I buy candy corn the second it hits the shelves and then I eat so much of it that I make myself sick of it.

favorite photos

After sharing our bedroom collage wall yesterday, I got nostalgic about the airplane photoshoot we did with my dear friend Allison of Allison Elizabeth Photography. 

I can't believe these photos were taken 2 years ago!

If you take a look at her website, her talent is obvious. She takes creative, artistic photographs and chooses fabulous scenery. Two years ago she was still at the beginning of her career and had an inclination to take photographs with a small prop plane. We were just lucky enough to be asked to be her models. And to know someone with connections at the airport - thanks, Shannon.

Josh was so adorably nervous, but we agreed.

I will cherish these photos always.

Allison is based out of Greenville, SC, but is open to travel - so, if you need a photographer, she comes highly recommended. 

She is not only a wonderful photographer, but she is a wonderful friend and I couldn't be more proud of her success. 

p.s. does anyone else miss my blonde hair? sigh.

collage wall: making it personal

Since yesterday I shared a new element to our room that makes me smile, I thought today I'd share an old element of our room that continues to evolve and make me smile - the collage wall.

Here's what it originally started as when we added our mirrored door in March.

And here's what it grew into over time.

It was fun to add personalized elements to make it all our own.

Here's the story behind some of the elements I added:

 -you can see here that I hung our commemorative wedding certificate using washi tape - I decided it was too beautiful to be kept in a box somewhere. It also helps to ensure that Josh never forgets our anniversary. :)

-A photobooth strip from our friends' wedding that just shows our personality - hung, using a fabric covered tack I made.

-The framed bride and groom is actually a save the date we received for a friend's wedding. It was too beautiful to throw away, so I framed it.

-When I made the Virginia map with a heart over Lynchburg for Baby Ana's nursery, I also made one for myself. A perfect addition to the wall because it's where we met and fell in love.

-Beside that is a favorite photo of Josh and I from our first year of dating. It's hung with rick rack and the flower holding it up is actually an old earring.

- I still love the silhouettes I made back in February - they were one of the first elements to the collage wall.

- After making my scrabble magnets, I realized the game was shot, so I took one of the game piece holders, painted it, and made it into a shelf to hold the word forever. It is held up by mounting tape.

- The 'i love you because' is a pinterest-inspired project. It's a fun, interactive piece to the wall because Josh and I use it to write fun things to each other. Today it says "i love you because you make a mean PB&J" - I wrote that after Josh lovingly packed me a lunch for work.

This canvas is an art print designed by yours truly. It's filled with fun things to do and ways to show love. 

-The tagline "behind every great love is a great story" is a cutout from The Notebook poster I had in college.

-The vintage floral print is a favorite thrift store find {$1}.

-The gilded gold frame is a yard sale find {$.50} and serves to frame one of our favorite photos taken by the talented Allison Elizabeth Photography.

trying my hand at embroidery

I took on my first embroidery project recently.
All it required was pillowcases, a large embroidery hoop, embroidery floss, an embroidery needle, pins, tissue paper and this love embroidery pattern from lazy may.
p.s. in case you're confused, that funky bird is the pincushion I made.


Since this was my first try at embroidery, I'm not really sure how you're supposed to transfer patterns to your fabric, but I decided to trace the pattern onto tissue paper and pin it in place so that I could embroider right over it.


Here I go. I used two strands of DMC floss 3820 - mustardy yellow.


I know there are millions of kinds of embroidery stitches, but since I don't know any of them yet, I just stuck with simple, straightforward stitches.


And more stitches...


And even more stitches.
I'm not sure exactly how long it took me to embroider both pillows. There was a Rachel Zoe marathon on and all time was lost. It was ba-nan-as. (Sorry, couldn't resist.)


And when I was finished, I just tore off the tissue paper....


...and was left with this:




I was so proud of my stitchery. Being as it was my first time and all, I'd say those o's are rather impressive.


I was in the market for new shams but I decided I like these much better.




Ah, just looking at that makes me ready for bed.

Anyone have any advice for future embroidery projects for this newbie?

thrifted & gifted

When I'm thrifting, I'm always keeping my eyes open for things I can give to people. And I love knowing that my best friends would never turn their nose up at a thrifted gift. 

That was the case with this thrifted bunny. I saw him and I knew he had potential.

A few coats of pink spray paint later and he was a whole new bunny. And he looks so happy in his new home after I gifted him to my friend for her baby girl's nursery.

On subsequent thrifting trip, I found this vintage blue gingham dress. I'm a sucker for gingham and eyelets.

I am not a sucker for weird looking kittens.

A few homemade fabric flowers later and I had a whole new dress on my hands.

Definitely worthy to be gifted to a precious baby girl. 

I also like that my friends know that i love and appreciate a good thrifted gift. My friend Cheryl recently gave me this vintage stationary set and I am in love.

The box gets me everytime. And the stationary is so unique.
